Passive voice means that the subject of the sentence is receiving the action of the verb rather than performing the action.

Verbs can be written in the active or the passive voice.  In the active voice, the subject of the sentence acts upon something or someone (for example, The earthquake left Haiti's capital city in ruins).  In the passive voice, the subject is acted upon (Haiti's capital city was left in ruins by the earthquake).
