In order to comply with modern accessibility standards, EBSCO has moved away from Adobe Digital Editions and has switched to Thorium Reader when using the full eBook download feature.  What is Thorium?

Thorium Reader is a free, open-source EPUB reading application available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it includes the following key features:

  • Screen reader support (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver)
  • Keyboard navigation
  • Customizable reading interface
  • EPUB 3 with accessibility support
  • DAISY audiobook support

In addition, Thorium Reader allows for

  • Note taking
  • Highlighting
  • Bookmarking
  • Searching within the e-book

When downloading an EBSCO eBook, first be sure that Thorium Reader is installed on your device (see the attached links for downloading to Windows, Mac, Linux, and iOS).

After downloading an eBook, EBSCOhost will provide you with a passphrase for you to copy in order to open the e-Book in Thorium. This passphrase will be generated upon full eBook download, and can be used on up to six devices simultaneously for access to active checkouts.

If you forget your passphrase, you can regenerate it in the full-text download workflow. You will not need to reenter the regenerated passphrase on a device where you have entered it previously.

Is there a mobile app available?
