Below are a few search suggestions. The search results will not be limited to only peer reviewed sources, but will include eBooks because they are scholarly sources and a bit more plentiful than are peer reviewed items.

In the search box on the Library homepage, type exactly:  "1820-1840" transportation "united states"

The industrial revolution was longer than that, but for this search, the dates seemed to work.
Be sure to put the quotation marks where you see them.  That way, those words or dates will be more likely to be searched for together.

Another idea is to search the history of the modes of transportation.

For example:  canals "united states" transportation history of

Again, use the quotation marks as shown.

A similar search for railroads and roads can also be tried.

Other search suggestions include:

"united states" industrial revolution labor conditions
"industrial revolution" "working conditions" "united states"
